Shopping Service and Product Review: Devilinspired + Souffle Song

The Review:

Recently, Devilinspired reached out to me and offered to sponsor a dress for me to review – I was very excited about it because they have a lot of pieces available in their shop that are on my wishlist, as well as a nice selection of items from Taobao brands I am unfamiliar with but would love to shop from someday. The dress I received, a JSK from Souffle Song’s Universal Nature series, surprised me in a lot of ways! Take a look ♡

This JSK first caught my eye when Souffle Song debuted their Fall 2016 collections at New York Fashion Week last year. It is one of two JSK cuts in this series and features a glittering gold print with tiny moons, stars, and constellations. I have found myself loving navy colorways more and more as my wardrobe grows, especially if they feature bright contrasting details like this. Choosing a dress to review was difficult at first, but the more I looked over the details of this JSK the more I loved it. My favorite part is the corset detailing on the bodice!

Upon receiving it, I was a little surprised to find that all of the ribbon lacing, the waist ties, and the detachable pearl chain were in separate packages instead of arriving already attached to the dress (as is my experience with other brands). Not that big of a hassle, but the gold ribbons that I received are much shorter than those shown in Souffle Song’s stock photos so they were a little more difficult to work with than I expected. After going back to look, I discovered that these ribbons were also considerably shorter than the stock photos on the JSK worn during NYFW, but since I really like the look of the longer ribbons I’ll probably buy a spool of something similar and cut them to my preferred length. The lace on my particular JSK is also noticeably lighter in color than what is shown in Souffle Song’s photos – again, not a very big deal to me, but still a bit of a surprise considering what I expected from the official photos.

Happily, the overall construction of the dress is solid and the material is nice and soft. It’s also a nice weight and heavier than many other other JSKs in my closet, but demands a very fluffy petticoat to maintain optimal poof!

Since I wasn’t sure if I had any hair accessories in my wardrobe that would match this particular shade of navy, I wanted to purchase the matching headbow and make 100% sure I had something to fall back on just in case nothing else I owned worked out. When I asked about it, Devilinspired was kind enough to actually include the headbow in the sponsorship as well. Interestingly enough, it differs from Souffle Song’s stock photos in several ways and I’m not sure what to make of it; the most glaring difference is that my headbow is clearly offset from the center of the headband, while all other photos I’ve seen of this item show the bow resting centered on the model or mannequin. The bow is stitched in place and cannot be slid on the headband, and it is a little heavy when you also factor in the weight of the veil which makes it feel a little unbalanced when worn. The cabochon gem on my headbow is also different from the stock photos and does not sit flat on the knot of the bow, and some of the beading is dissimilar as well. With as stiff as the bow is, it felt a little silly to wear it so far to the side but I really had no choice considering it is not wired and cannot be teased into laying flat.

I am not unhappy with what I received, but I was definitely struck by all these variations. They have really only affected my impression of Souffle Song though, as Devilinspired has been very easy to work with throughout this collaboration. They have been more than accommodating and answered all of my questions quickly and clearly, which has thankfully made this an overall very pleasant experience for me. ♡

About This Coordinate:

I wasn’t sure how this JSK was going to work out with this underdress, but they ended up working together more nicely than I expected so I’m glad I gave it a shot! The only thing I’m a little bummed about is the fact that the ruffles on the neckline cover up the jeweled bow and the pearl chain on the bodice of the JSK, so I wore a necklace with pearls to bring that detail back into the look ♡
